These are children of a village in Mozambique where Ascend Alliance installed several shallow wells with simple technology rope and washer pumps to provide both drinking water and water for irrigation. This is an example of what we desire to install in the Apuk Padoc Communities of Southern Sudan where underground water is close enough to the surface to make these units practical and possible to build.

This photo is an example of a Free-Standing Roofwater Catchment System that can be built with either a large plastic storage tank capable of storing up to 1000 liters of water, or a larger underground storage tank capable of holding up to 5000 liters of clean water. We plan to install units like this in the Apuk Padoc Communities where underground water is too deep to make shallow well technology practical. Water from roofs of this kind remains pure and can be safely used for drinking. It has limited capability, however, for irrigation of small gardens. Notice that the enclosure under the roof can be used as a coral for safely enclosing small farm animals. These units can be built for less than $400.

This photo taken in November of 2009 in one of the Apuk Padoc villages shows women using one of the existing deep well pumps (informally called "boreholes") that provide clean water for drinking and for watering animals. During Phase 2 of the Machara Miracle Network Five Year Community Development Plan it is stated that 15 more of these pumps will be installed in the communities along with repair of several of the existing borehole pumps that are not working.

Water!  Water!  Water!
By far the biggest impact we can have on building this self sustaining community is developing and building the water technology.

With this resource so many things change for the better. Everything comes to life!!
  • For example, no more famine because water will be available permanently to drink and grow crops.
  • Water borne diseases that cause sickness and death will decrease drastically; saving thousands of lives and adding quality of life and health.
  • The young girls and mothers will no longer have to spend hours searching for water. Often taking 2 – 7 hours a day.
  • No health complications from carrying the water for miles on their heads.
  • Young girls will now be able to attend school and receive an education that benefits the community immensely.
  • Villages of people no longer need to migrate in search of water during the dry season.
  • Available water enables the establishment of markets, self employment, building, agriculture, animal husbandry, schools, healthcare and general social infrastructure to thrive and grow.
  • Many of the health issues will go away with the advent of clean water.
Results:  Very happy and grateful people!

**$15,000** will provide for the construction of one more deep well with stainless steel pump.
